An Introduction to Slot Machines

[ English ]

Slot machine games are one of the most popular games to bet on at casinos. On any given night, expect most of the machines to be filled with eager gamblers. They come in a multitude of betting levels; a few just cost five cents a spin and others can cost as much as twenty dollars a spin. Although slots are a gambling tool, a lot of folks are afraid of the big money table games and prefer the fun and exhilaration of a good slot machine.

The first mechanical slot machine was assembled in Eighteen Ninety Five and was dubbed the "Liberty Bell." Invented by a California machinist, the first slot machines had three spinning reels with a cracked Liberty Bell, diamonds, hearts, and spades on each. Prior to this invention, the term "slot machines" was used to characterize various types of vending machines.

The initial across the board use of slots in American casinos is credited to the Flamingo Hotel, Las Vegas in and around 1940. The owner of the casino had originally thought the slot machines would be perfect to captivate tired wives of some of the biggest high roller customers of the betting house. Little did he know that slot games would be an enjoyable game for nearly everyone and that the enticement would extend further than the bored wives. At this time, it is said, slot machines make up over two-thirds of all income generated by American betting houses.

Slot machine games beyond a doubt have a rich history. From the small creation of the mid-19th century to the multi-million dollar business of today, slots will continue to develop in prominence.
